Question by Sandy: Gastric Bypass for Paraplegics? Good or bad idea?
I know with typical gastric bypass surgery – whether it be lap band or otherwise – there are many things you cannot do after the surgery – ie) no heavy lifting, no driving etc and usually has a recovery period of 3 weeks. For someone who is paraplegic how drastically would this change the recovery period. Even little things such as “no heavy lifting” would that include someone who is paraplegic transferring to and from their wheelchair? I’m not sure if anyone is in this situation or knows anyone that is, but any information would be great.

Im not entirely sure about Gastric Bypass but I know that for a Lap Band there is no recovery time. My dad is a Bariatric surgeon and his patients can drive home after the anesthesia wears off. As for lifting yourself in and out of the wheelchair, with a Lap Band I think your only real concern would be that the stitches tear. With a gastric bypass, I dont know. Maybe it does have a recovery period.
